Eggs!

The chickens started laying eggs yesterday! We were worried that they would be so stressed out moving to their new home (especially as they are stuck in the barn for their 30 day quarantine) that they wouldn't lay any eggs for weeks. The fantastic news is that two chickens are laying, not just the one we thought was laying! It's all very exciting. It's the chocolate eggers who are laying now, still no sign of eggs from the mixed flock. Sadly, only one of them thought to lay an egg in the nest, the other one just plopped it down in the middle of the coop and they all walked over it. We will have to have a talk today about proper laying procedure.
We thought that they would be really upset being locked up in the barn but no one seems to mind it at all. We have been giving them fresh vegetables every day and that seems to keep them entertained. They are even spying over the fence to get a look at the chickens on the other side of the stall, which is very cute. We should probably quarantine them more seriously but they all seem healthy and we want them to know that the other chickens are there. They will need to be friends when they all go back to free ranging in the garden.
Well, we are off to cook some omelets. Just joking, Aby would kill me. She showed everyone we met yesterday the eggs and walked around with them for hours.  There has been talk of having them framed. Aby keeps sneaking into the kitchen and getting them out of the refrigerator to look at. Hopefully today's eggs will actually be for eating!

Just a quick update. After spending an amazing holiday at home in Reno, Aby and I are back in Portland and we have news. Yes NEWS! Good news even. The couple we met through Friends of Family Farmers have decided that they would like to work with us. They like us, they will accept payments and they have a place that we can rent that has acreage attached to it. We can farm all in one place this year. I know we all thought it was never going to happen. It's almost as if trying to start a business that requires buying land with no money is hard. Who would have guessed that? Anyway, I will keep you updated. It's all very exciting.

In other news our Momma goat Baily is due, we think with quadruplets, in February. We will post pics as soon as the sure to be cute additions arrive.
